TBR Shelf Privacy Policy
Effective 8 September 2026 · Luma Design LLC
TBR Shelf is a private reading library. We designed it so that your books, notes, ratings, and covers stay with you. This page explains exactly what the app does with your data.
What we collect
Nothing. TBR Shelf has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no servers of our own. We never see your library, your reading history, or anything you type into the app.
Where your data lives
- On your device. Your library, notes, quotes, ratings, and cover images are stored in the app's private container on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- In your iCloud, if you turn on sync. With "Sync with iCloud" enabled, the library is stored in your personal iCloud private database, which only your Apple Account can read. Apple's iCloud terms apply. You can turn sync off in Settings at any time.
Network requests the app makes
The app contacts third-party services only to fetch public book information, and only when you ask it to:
- Cover art and book search: Open Library, Google Books, and the Apple Books catalogue, queried by title, author, or ISBN.
- Readers' ratings: to show what other readers thought of a book, the app looks up its average rating on Open Library and Google Books using only the title, author, or ISBN. This runs quietly in the background for your library, on Wi-Fi only, and can't identify you.
- Imports: Goodreads (a public profile link or an export file you choose), The StoryGraph (an export file you choose), a Google Sheet link you paste, or a CSV file you choose. Files are read locally and never uploaded anywhere.
- Quotes and highlights: a public Goodreads profile link you paste (hearted quotes and highlights you've marked visible), or Kindle, Libby, Readwise, or Apple Books files and text you choose to bring in. Everything stays on your device or in your iCloud.
- Buy links: tapping a store button opens that retailer in your browser. Some links may include an affiliate code that supports the app's development; the retailer's own privacy policy applies once you leave the app.
- Optional AI features: if, and only if, you enter your own Anthropic API key in Settings, the app sends the title, author, and description of a book you select to Anthropic to fill in genres, tropes, and a summary. Your key is stored in your device keychain and never leaves your device except in requests to Anthropic.
The reading circle (optional)
The reading circle is an invite-only feed you can switch on if you want to. It is off by default, and nothing is shared until you start a circle yourself.
- Built on iCloud sharing. Your circle posts, likes, and replies are stored in your own iCloud private database and shared, through Apple's CloudKit sharing, only with the people you invite. Apple controls access; Luma Design LLC has no server and never sees a post.
- What friends see. The name and emoji you choose, plus the posts you make: a book's title, author, and cover, and optionally your rating, review, a saved line, or a note. Your email address is used only by Apple to deliver an invitation and is never shown to us.
- Automatic posts are opt-in. Each kind (finished a book, saved a line, started a book, added to the pile) has its own switch in Settings, and all of them start off. Imports never post.
- Your controls. Remove anyone from your circle, leave anyone else's, hide a person's posts, delete any post or reply you wrote, and close your circle to delete everything you posted from iCloud.
- Shared book links open a page on lumadesign.dev that shows the book's public details from Google Books. That page has no analytics and stores nothing.
Widgets and Live Activities
Home Screen widgets and the reading-session Live Activity read a small snapshot of your library from a shared container on the same device. Nothing is transmitted.
Children
TBR Shelf does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children.
Deleting your data
Deleting the app removes its local data. To remove synced data, turn off iCloud sync in Settings and use "Erase library", or manage iCloud storage for TBR Shelf in iOS or macOS Settings.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with an updated effective date.
